New Regional Monitoring Strategy Piloted this Summer
Five Guardian Watchmen Programs are collecting field data this patrol season for select priority indicators important to managing cultural and ecological resources in their territories. The Haisla, Heiltsuk, Kitasoo/Xai'Xais, Nuxalk and Wuikinuxv Nations are documenting information on wildlife sightings, commercial and tourist boat traffic, prawn and crab fishing effort, and tourist activities.
Guardian Watchmen programs are also recording impacts to cultural and ecological sites and enforcement incidents. The information collected will be used to inform land and marine use planning and implementation and enforce regulations.
The Regional Monitoring Strategy was developed in response to community needs for a standardized approach to learning more about and addressing issues of concern in each territory and region-wide. The Coastal Guardian Watchman Network is providing community training on collecting field data and inputting and analysing in an online data management system. Contact us for more information.
